"Metaphysical Manifestations," a showing of work by three Central Michigan University art professors opens Wednesday, April 4, 2012, and runs through Sunday, May 13, 2012, in the Wassenaar Art Gallery at ArtVentures, 107 E. Superior St., in Alma.
Steve Barber, assistant professor of drawing and painting; Al Wildey, associate professor of photography; and Michael Volker, assistant professor of painting and drawing, will exhibit individual works and works the artists have collaborated on together.
According to Volker, the exhibit conveys transcendent meaning beyond the physical world portrayed in the images. "Meta is a Greek prefix with a variety of descriptions whose essence indicates beyond either in terms of time or meaning. So in this case, we are three artists with very diverse styles. However what we have in common is that we are all representational, we deal with the physical world in some way. We also treat our images of the physical world in such a way that we all want our viewers to think beyond the physical, to transcend it or go beyond."
The images of all three artists and the collaborative pieces are ideas clothed in form interpreted by the way they light the image, or form the image, or position parts on the image. The decisions they make on how to present their representational images are intended to help, or encourage their viewers to transcend the physical, to think beyond the physical and to access the spiritual through the physical.
Barber and Volker received their masters of fine art from CMU while Wildey received an MFA from the University of Idaho. In addition to teaching, the artists have exhibited nationally and internationally.
